Estimating Internship - Summer 2020

Carpentry Contractors, a division of Lyman Companies, is seeking an Estimating Intern for the summer of 2020!

This position will be based out of Montrose, MN and requires the use of computer technology and mathematical skills to prepare an estimation of the amount of material needed for the construction of a home in accordance with Company policies.

Our Internship Program is customized to expose students to different areas of work while matching career interest with projects. This 12 week paid program features three work dimensions; fundamentals, other duties, and project work.

Intern Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Estimates the amount of labor/materials needed for home construction according to company policy, local building code, and builders scope of work utilizing Planswift or like software.
  2. Assists salesmen as needed with customer orders and materials lists.
  3. Assists in other take-offs as requested/needed
  4. Provides assistance to contractors as needed.
  5. Assists sales staff with blueprint reading and construction procedures.
  6. Review actual vs. estimate on completion of each project and use this information when bidding new projects.
  7. Works on sales/hardware counter as assigned
  8. Control expenditures to conform to company budgetary requirements.
  9. Attend meetings, events, and other networking opportunities.
  10. Project work to be assigned by location manager.
  11. Complies with operational safety and security policies and procedures.
  12. Complies with Company’s attendance policy by maintaining regular and predictable attendance.
  13. Other duties as assigned by location management.
  14. Tasks are subject to change.

Job Classification and Compensation:

  • Interns earn a competitive hourly wage.
  • This position is considered full-time for the duration of the internship.
  • After 40 hours worked per week this position is eligible for overtime (1 ˝ times hourly wage).
  • Interns are not eligible for Lyman Companies benefits.

Qualifications and Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Full-time student who is in good standing with their college or university.
  • On track to a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in an accredited program in AAS in Civil, Architectural or Design, Construction, or related fields.
  • Legally able to work in the United States.
  • Special skills required – Ability to read blueprint and other technical materials. Ability to interpret building plans in diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables. Ability to operate networked computer system and specialized software application programs and to instruct others in effective use of application software. Must have excellent oral communication skills and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Special knowledge required – Understanding of measurements and basic math principals.
  • Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs. on a random basis, standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time, and bending or stooping. Ability to travel and perform according to the requirements of the position; valid driver license.
